It happens everywhere the Saline Fiddlers go. After a particularly well-received performance, we get email from young people in the audience with the same message: "I want to be a fiddler too! How can I join the group?" In fact, most of today's Fiddlers can remember seeing the Saline Fiddlers perform when they were little, and thinking, "That's what I want to do when I'm bigger!" And through hard work and dedication, they have made that dream a reality.
The Saline Fiddlers are the nation's premiere youth fiddling show band. They perform 70-80 functions in and around Michigan each year, in addition to touring throughout the nation and internationally. Membership in the group conveys numerous benefits beyond outstanding musical skills, including:
The group rehearses for three hours on Sunday afternoons and spends two or three long weekends together each year at "fiddle camp" learning new music and doing team-building activities. In addition, members are expected to practice on their own time to perfect their musical performance. A strong emphasis on performing, public speaking, and advanced musicianship gives this group of students a semi-professional status in the music community.
Auditions are competitive and limited spaces are available each fall. The basic requirements are enrollment in a Saline High School music class for the upcoming school year and a 3.0 GPA or better. Prospective members may audition for Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass (guitar), Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo, Dobro, Drum Set, Piano or Sound Tech positions.
